About the event
Picture this: scenes inspired by Southwark Park and the vibrant Bermondsey area, transformed into stunning new works, in a hidden gem gallery space next to the lake of Southwark Park.
In this special project to celebrate Southwark Park Galleries' 40th anniversary, Joy Labinjo was invited to capture scenes of everyday life around the park with a fresh perspective. Her paintings, drawn from a mix of personal snapshots and found images, radiate familiarity, inviting everyone to see a bit of themselves in her work and feel right at home.
Labinjo is a master of capturing intimate moments, blending the real with the imagined, often using family photos, found pictures, and historical material as her muses. She’s tackled big themes like identity, power, race, Blackness, and the ways community and family shape our world today. Her vibrant style is a feast for the eyes, with bold colors, patterns, and playful motifs that jump off the canvas. At the core of it all? Labinjo’s passion for storytelling and her love for people’s everyday lives.
Join us for an exclusive exhibition walkthrough of this solo show with Isabel Vegas, Associate Director of Tiwani Contemporary, who represents Joy Labinjo. This is the final weekend of this excellent exhibition, don't miss out!
